ABOUT EUGENE
Eugene Pool grew up in a house with original art on the walls by artists such as Cassatt, Picasso, Kline, da Silva, and Pollock. Writing about art for adults came naturally to him. Exploring Costa Rica, England, Canada, Maine, and the West led him to create "eco-thrillers" about wildlife for children.
After graduating from Harvard, he taught art history and English at two private schools, Buckingham Browne & Nichols in Cambridge,MA and Winsor in Boston. At the first school, he received the Thurgood Marshall Award "for his exceptional ability to communicate with diverse audiences." At the Winsor School, he was chosen as Outstanding Teacher.
Pool's books for adults include the IPPY award-winning Heroic Women of the Art World; The 100-Year Secret; The Art of Fairy Tales; and Summer House, a collection of poems. Of Heroic Women, Kirkus Reviews wrote, “Well-chosen and well-told, these artists’ stories will inspire artists and non-artists alike.”
His books for young readers are The Captain of Battery Park; The Ocelot Secret; and the just-published Fly For Your Life, about an osprey and a heron on a dangerous migration. Of Fly For Your Life, Kirkus said, “The connection between the two characters is organic and compelling. Readers interested in birds will find this avian-friendship story’s fact-filled narrative intriguing.”
Pool and his family spend most summers on an island in Maine. It's a great place to start a new book!
